Andrew (manliness)

(Brother of Peter)

One of the original twelve appointed by Jesus

Parents: Jonas (or John)

Home: Bethsaida and Capernaum

Business/Occupation: Fisherman

Writings: None

Characteristics:

References to Andrew in the gospels are few, however, what is recorded of him reveals him as a humble, unassuming, devoted, and consistent disciple who enjoyed a special intimacy with Christ (Mark 13:3).

1.  Originally a Disciple of John the Baptist, Andrew became a believer in Jesus

     (John 1: 35-41).

2. He felt the need to abandon his handicraft and accept the call of Christ and became a

    “fisher of men” (Matthew 4:18-19).

3. Andrew was a personal worker/witness.

            A. He brought his brother, Peter, to Jesus (John 1:35-41).

            B. He brought the lad with his barley loaves and fishes to Jesus (John 6:8-9).

            C. He brought the Greeks to Jesus (John 12:20-22).

Andrew was neither a writer of an Epistle, nor the founder of a church, nor a leading figure in the Apostolic Age, but simply an earnest seeker after truth, an intimate disciple of Jesus Christ, ever anxious that others should know Him. Tradition says he preached in Scythia, Greece, and Asia Minor. It is thought that he was crucified on a Saint Andrew’s Cross.
